4-Azidobenzonitrile (CAS 18523-41-6) is an aromatic azide reagent for copper-catalyzed azide–alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) and related click chemistry applications. Its molecular formula is C₇H₄N₄ with a molecular weight of 144.13 g/mol. It is also known as 4-cyanophenyl azide.
The compound bears a para-azido group on a benzonitrile scaffold, enabling [3+2] cycloaddition with terminal or internal alkynes under CuAAC conditions to yield 1,2,3-triazole conjugates. The electron-withdrawing nitrile substituent modulates the electronic character of the aromatic ring, influencing azide reactivity and the properties of the resulting triazole product. The compact, lipophilic aryl framework offers a low-molecular-weight handle for bioconjugation and probe assembly without introducing significant steric bulk.
